Our crappy old loud dishwasher finally broke, our landlord agreed immediately to replace it, but COVID made a dishwasher shortage

My dishwasher is not particularly good. It’s fine but it’s very audible. My wife and I have been wanting a new one for a long time. So yesterday when we discovered the sprayer thingie broke off from the hub, then fell over and melted itself onto the heating element, we rejoiced that we could get ourselves a quiet dishwasher on the landlord’s dime.

The landlord quickly said go ahead and get a new one and deduct it from the rent . I had already researched options, and identified a relatively cheap Whirlpool one that matches our stove and microwave. We don’t need anything super fancy, just one that’s not complete bargain basement, with decent sound deadening and some organizer things like flip down lids on the silverware basket and whatnot. Best Buy had the best price on it and could deliver/install it middle of next week. This fit the bill. Or so I thought.

In my haste to pick one out that matched, I didn’t check the height specs. My wife reminded me of this before I ordered. The bottom of our counter is 34.25" from the floor. The listed height spec of the dishwasher I had picked out is 34.5" . Fuck. I went down a rabbit hole of trying to figure out dishwasher heights, and the specs on this thing list a “minimum height” of 33.5" but it’s not clear what that means.

I called one other appliance store because they had a bunch of GE models on their site where there was no ambiguity in the specs about whether they’d fit under my counter, but those weren’t in stock. I tried to figure out with them if those Whirlpools might fit but they talked about removing back wheels from them to make them fit and that sounded undesirable.

All kinds of appliance places have all sorts of shortages on dishwashers right now, and here I am with a slightly borderline counter height that I can’t figure out what’ll friggin fit under it AND is available soon. Because oh yeah, I’m still on crutches from my achilles surgery and my wife is stuck doing the vast majority of housework.

At least I have really, truly, phenomenally good balance on one foot, and can manage to hand wash some dishes.

I’m guessing sanding/filing/cutting .25 inches out of your counter/the washing machine isn’t an option?

You can make the legs shorter. They adjust. If it says minimum height is 33.5 you should be good.

So, Whirlpool’s site says this:

Maximum Height

34-1/2 in

Cutout Height

33-7/8 in

Height

34-1/2 in

Minimum Height

33-1/2 in

I was all ready to just order online from Best Buy, but when I went round and round with the dude at the other store I called, he was all talking about taking wheels off, not simply adjusting things. If the adjustment range on these feet is at least a quarter inch it should fit under the counter. But the ambiguity gives me pause and I can’t get a hold of anybody who will tell me for sure it’ll fit. Last thing I want is to buy something and then find out when they show up at my house with it that it wont fit.

You might have that quarter inch, actually. In my kitchen, the tile runs up to the cabinets and dishwasher, but not under. So, the cabinet sits at a level the width of the tile lower. So, maybe, if you’re measuring from tile to counter, you might have a bit more.

Also, my favorite dishwasher story. Friend was selling his house, was under contract, just a week or two before close. Dishwasher breaks. Goes to store, “ give me the cheapest one you got”. Salesman points it out, but says listen, not to upsell you, but that thing sucks. Just spend a little more and you’ll get a lot better. Seriously, it’s awful. Friend explains the situation, says he’ll only use it a handful of times then  move, he doesn’t care. Moving day comes, he gets to the new house, and what dishwasher is there? The same fucking, cheap, awful dishwasher he bought for his old place.

Hmmmmm you may have something there with the tile. We do have actual tile in the kitchen, and it’s pretty thick. I’ve pulled our stove out to clean before and the tile extends under that a little bit but not all the way. I’ll have to see if my wife is able to scoot the dishwasher out and/or sit on a chair and muscle it out myself.

We ran against the same shortage with fridges. We’d been hoping ours would die so we could replace it under our home warranty. We finally decided to say screw-it and just buy one. My work has a decent employee perk program for a few items and we found an LG we liked. Placed the order and the day it was supposed to be delivered we got a call from LG saying it was out of stock. Thanks LG for waiting until the scheduled delivery day to tell us. On August 30 we bought one at Lowe’s; planned delivery date Oct 30.

We ran into a similar situation where only a limited number of fridges fit  due to clearance to a small cabinet above ours. Unfortunately we don’t have enough cabinet space as it is so just removing the cabinet wasn’t an option.

I wasn’t able to move the broken dishwasher, but I was able to take off a trim panel at the front of the bottom to see the front feet. They’re sitting on tile. Not sure if it extends all the way to the back but at least at the front the 34.25" is the max height I’m working with. I talked to Whirlpool customer service and they described some possible adjustments. They’re sending me the install manual for me to review in more detail. Might still work but I want to be as sure as possible before I order it.

Read the installation manual of the one you want online. It'll let you know if the wheels are adjustable, most have 3 positions or so

Looks like I’m in the clear. The website had the install manual. My counter height appears to be within the range of adjustment of the legs where they won’t have to be removed.

Kinja'd!!!

The customer service dude was viewing supposedly this same document and I told him my cabinet was 34-1/4" high, so I dunno why he couldn’t just tell me the legs don’t need to be removed. But I guess he was just quick skimming. Oh well, time to order the damn thing.

Good luck! Nothing a bigger pain in the ass than sending back an appliance

Some friends of mine had a fridge fail this spring. There weren’t shortages, but due to COVID, none of the appliance places they looked at were willing to come inside to deliver, which meant some complicated maneuvering to get it up the stairs, in the house and installed (and the reverse with the old fridge).

I had a recent summer experience of returning a 65" twice before I got a non-broken example. It was Best Buy and yet I went back for this dishwasher. But hey it’s a dishwasher shortage and this is the cheapest minimum halfway decent one that matches the other black Whirlpool minimum halfway decent appliances. Landlord very quickly said yes so I don't mind putting up with the shopping hassle. Such is renting from an individual property owner.

Thankfully Lowe’s is willing to deliver and install it. They say they’ll even move the old fridge to the garage so our local energy supplier can pick it up as part of an efficiency rebate.

Now that I got the dimensions figured out, it's a free minimum halfway decent new dishwasher that I just have to handle the logistics of to make happen relatively quickly-ish. And I get to live in a townhouse instead of a "luxury" highrise apartment.

We're going to be renting somewhere from January to October ish of next year. First time renting since 2006 for me. Not looking forward to it.
